AstraZeneca has warned that its erectile dysfunction drugs Cialis and Levitra are not being used for the treatment of prostate cancer.
The company has advised patients that erectile dysfunction drugs may carry a “black box warning” that the medication can cause serious side effects, including serious vision loss or a sudden loss of vision.
“We advise patients to take Cialis and Levitra under the supervision of a healthcare professional,” AstraZeneca said in a statement.
The company said it had received a report from a specialist on the risks of taking the erectile dysfunction drugs.
It added that the patient information leaflet should include details of the risk of serious side effects, including loss of vision, sudden hearing loss, prolonged erection (priapism), and prolonged painful erection (priapism).
AstraZeneca said the company is working to provide guidance on the use of the drugs in patients.
“We are committed to working with patients and other health professionals to take appropriate steps to minimise the risk of serious side effects associated with the use of erectile dysfunction drugs,” the statement said.
The company added that it has taken steps to ensure that patients are being treated for prostate cancer in the UK and abroad. The warning was added to the AstraZeneca’s website on April 26.
